Legends Luncheon presented by Nationwide raises $1.45 million for Nationwide Children's Hospital and Nicklaus Children's Health Care Foundation alliance
By Brian Weis
DUBLIN, Ohio - The Memorial Tournament presented by Workday hosted the 15th annual Legends Luncheon presented by Nationwide today, a unique, award-winning fundraiser that brings to life the alliance between the Nicklaus Children's Health Care Foundation and Nationwide Children's Hospital. All proceeds of the Legends Luncheon directly benefit the young patients and families that Nationwide Children's compassionately serves each day.
The goal of the Luncheon is to support national initiatives and advances in pediatric care and research throughout Nationwide Children's. To date, the event has supported more than 30 hospital departments, initiatives, projects, and programs. To that end, the 2025 Legends Luncheon raised $1.45 million, bringing the 15-year total to more than $16 million.
Executive Chairs of the Legends Luncheon presented by Nationwide were Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, together with Nationwide CEO Kirt Walker and his wife Cindy, and Nationwide Children's CEO Tim Robinson and his wife Jane. Luncheon guests experienced a charity event that is unique to Columbus, Ohio. Held at the Ohio Union on the campus of The Ohio State University, guests enjoyed a special conversation with Memorial Tournament Founder and Host Jack Nicklaus, 2025 Memorial Tournament Honoree and First Lady of Golf Barbara Nicklaus, and their five children: Jack II, Steve, Nan (O'Leary), Gary and Michael. Steve Sands, NBC Sports and Golf Channel on-air personality covering the PGA TOUR and Olympics, moderated the discussion.
The final highlight of the Legends Luncheon presented by Nationwide was the presentation of the Nicklaus Youth Spirit Award, which is given annually to a patient or family who in some way has demonstrated a strong, driving spirit in overcoming obstacles, an unwavering optimistic outlook, and a powerful conviction for their connection to Nationwide Children's.
The Nicklaus Youth Spirit Award honors the courage within that inspires volunteerism and community outreach, which has a positive influence on others. This year Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, along with daughter Nan O'Leary and sons Jack II and Gary, presented the Nicklaus Youth Spirit Award to Nationwide Children's patient champion Emersen White, 18, of Columbus, Ohio.
It was late December of 2020 when then-13-year-old Emersen was bedridden with what she and her parents believed to be a stomach flu. After two days and no improvement, Emersen experienced a fainting spell that compelled her parents to take her to the Emergency Department at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
During her visit to the Emergency Department, a blood culture revealed that Emersen had a bacterial infection known as methicillin-susceptible staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), which affected her heart. The MSSA caused inflammation of her heart valves and chambers, known as bacterial endocarditis, and Emersen needed open-heart surgery to repair a damaged mitral valve.
"We thought that our lives were moving forward after the surgery," remembers Emersen's dad, Craig, "until a routine blood test came back abnormal, requiring us to return to the hospital."
Doctors discovered that MSSA had continued to damage Emersen's heart, and she would need another open-heart surgery just two weeks after the first. Two weeks following the second surgery, Emersen received an additional diagnosis of a rare aneurysm in her heart requiring a third and final open-heart surgery.
Today, after more than six months spent at Nationwide Children's, fighting additional issues like organizing pneumonia and blood clots that caused a stroke, Emersen is back to spending time with her friends and family and planning for her future.
"Nationwide Children's is such a special place to me for many reasons," says Emersen. "But mostly because I know that everyone I met did everything in their power to help me to be a healthy teenager again."
The experience she underwent and the care she received at Nationwide Children's sparked an interest for Emersen in the field of healthcare and a desire to help others who are in similar situations.

About: Brian Weis
Brian Weis is the mastermind behind GolfTrips.com, a vast network of golf travel and directory sites covering everything from the rolling fairways of Wisconsin to the sunbaked desert layouts of Arizona. If there’s a golf destination worth visiting, chances are, Brian has written about it, played it, or at the very least, found a way to justify a "business trip" there.
As a card-carrying member of the Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA), International Network of Golf (ING), Golf Travel Writers of America (GTWA), International Golf Travel Writers Association (IGTWA), and The Society of Hickory Golfers (SoHG), Brian has the credentials to prove that talking about golf is his full-time job. In 2016, his peers even handed him The Shaheen Cup, a prestigious award in golf travel writing—essentially the Masters green jacket for guys who don’t hit the range but still know where the best 19th holes are.
Brian’s love for golf goes way back. As a kid, he competed in junior and high school golf, only to realize that his dreams of a college golf scholarship had about the same odds as a 30-handicap making a hole-in-one. Instead, he took the more practical route—working on the West Bend Country Club grounds crew to fund his University of Wisconsin education. Little did he know that mowing greens and fixing divots would one day lead to a career writing about the best courses on the planet.
In 2004, Brian turned his golf passion into a business, launching GolfWisconsin.com. Three years later, he expanded his vision, and GolfTrips.com was born—a one-stop shop for golf travel junkies looking for their next tee time. Today, his empire spans all 50 states, and 20+ international destinations.
On the course, Brian is a weekend warrior who oscillates between a 5 and 9 handicap, depending on how much he's been traveling (or how generous he’s feeling with his scorecard). His signature move" A high, soft fade that his playing partners affectionately (or not-so-affectionately) call "The Weis Slice." But when he catches one clean, his 300+ yard drives remind everyone that while he may write about golf for a living, he can still send a ball into the next zip code with the best of them.
Whether he’s hunting down the best public courses, digging up hidden gems, or simply outdriving his buddies, Brian Weis is living proof that golf is more than a game—it’s a way of life.
