Glenross Golf Club

Columbus Golf Guide

Two things that are not likely to happen in the Columbus area: A visitor wearing a University of Michigan sweatshirt will have drinks purchased for him all night, or that a visitor will be invited to play Jack Nicklaus' masterpiece, Muirfield Village Golf Club, home to the PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament every year. Yet visitors (except perhaps Wolverines) will still feel plenty welcome in Columbus, where numerous attractions will keep them busy.

The Short North Arts District, featuring galleries, shops and restaurants, is the place to soak up the local culture. Then visitors may want to explore the most modern neighborhood in the city, the Easton Town Center. And the botanically inclined will definitely not want to miss Whetstone Park/Park of Roses, where 13 acres containing more than 11,000 rose bushes are there to be explored.

The list of architects who have built courses in the Columbus area is a veritable who's who, with the likes of Arnold Palmer, Tom Weiskopf/Jay Morrish, Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Jr., Donald Ross and Jack Nicklaus Jr. highlighting the list. Of course, most of the big-name designers built private courses, but the public still has plenty of quality golf from which to choose.

Mentel Memorial Golf Course, for example, is a long but extremely forgiving course, playing more than 7,000 yards but only having a slope of 118-a bomber's paradise. A public course that displays a master's touch is Raymond Memorial Golf Course, designed by RTJ Sr. Another public track with bite is Champions Golf Course-duffers beware. A friendly course located in Delaware, Ohio is Glenross Golf Club, which features seven ponds and a creek but only plays to a 113. Plenty of options, but golfers willing to do jail time may risk trying to sneak on one of the private courses.
